The Energy Center of Wisconsin is an independent nonprofit that promotes sustainable energy through research, education and demonstration. With offices in Madison, WI, Chicago, IL and Minneapolis, MN, the Energy Center conducts objective research to better understand how consumers use energy and to identify barriers that may prevent more efficient use. Services include design consulting and continuing education for architects, engineers and builders, and field research to provide insight on improving the performance of new and existing buildings.

Director of Education

Join the green revolution and create a more sustainable, prosperous world.

The Energy Center of Wisconsin is seeking a visionary, passionate leader to direct its professional energy education programs and manage a multi-disciplinary education and training team. The Energy Center provides innovative research and education to change market practices in energy efficiency and renewable energy, with particular emphasis on solutions for the Midwest. Our goal is to develop solutions to energy challenges that promote economic and environmental sustainability.

The Energy Center uses education to increase our visibility and influence in the energy efficiency industry. We target architects, engineers and builders with a continuing education portfolio that includes regional conferences, workshops and seminars, and digital offerings. This position serves a key role on the Energy Center's leadership team. Responsibilities include:

  • business development and management of education and training initiatives;
  • funding development and proposal writing;
  • fostering client partnerships and building new relationships;
  • designing, implementing and evaluating education and training programs;
  • directly supervising staff;
  • managing a $1.8M budget; and
  • representing the Energy Center at state and national forums.

The Director of Education also contributes to the Energy Center's company-wide vision and management including financial strategies, short- and long-term planning and goal setting, implementing organizational change, and Board of Directors relations.

The successful candidate will contribute valuable expertise and experience to the Energy Center's strategic educational approach, which depends on a commitment to:

  • supporting and following green meeting standards;
  • championing the development of digital strategies including hybrid events; and
  • maintaining a retail education framework.

Candidates with a background in association management and/or experience in the energy, environmental or sustainability industry are preferred.

Senior Energy Engineer

The Energy Center of Wisconsin is seeking an energy engineer for our Chicago office with a desire to apply both reason and creativity towards the creation of a sustainable energy society. We are a private non-profit organization that is mission-driven, independent, and objective. We seek practical solution paths among a world of competing interests.

Primary responsibilities:

  • Evaluate energy efficiency and renewable energy strategies in buildings, campus, and community settings
  • Quantify energy system performance, life cycle cost economics, and emissions reduction potential
  • Identify, quantify, and optimize energy savings opportunities during early building design stages of new buildings and for existing facilities
  • Develop and manage internal and external research, consulting and outreach projects
  • Develop and grow business opportunities, working with senior management to establish annual business development targets

Minimum requirements:

  • Bachelor's degree in engineering, architecture, or related field.
  • 3–5+ years energy systems experience with a design firm, commercial or institutional facility
  • Fundamental knowledge of building energy systems, energy analysis, and thermal science
  • Experience with energy modeling software such as eQUEST, TRNSYS, TRACE, EnergyPlus or other similar software
  • Knowledge of relevant building energy codes, green building rating systems, and ASHRAE standards
  • Ability to perform in a flexible work environment
  • Excellent communications skills

Desirable experience:

  • Ability to model novel or complex energy systems and develop specialized energy analysis software.
  • Experience leading client interaction and public presentations
  • Active involvement in external networking groups/committees relevant to efficient building design
  • Advanced degree, professional engineering registration, LEED Accreditation, or Energy Manager Certification
  • Energy efficiency program design and implementation for commercial and industrial programs
  • Experience with building energy monitoring or campus energy management
  • Management of $100k+ multi-year budgets including subcontracts
