Donald Fournier discusses the opportunities for reducing energy use in new commercial buildings.
Overview
To meet the challenge of reducing energy use in the building sector, the American Institute of Architects is promoting sustainable design strategies that
- achieve a minimum 50 percent reduction from the current level of consumption of fossil fuels used to construct and operate new and renovated buildings by the year 2010
- promote further reductions of remaining fossil fuel consumption by 10 percent or more in each of the following five years
This course will introduce you to an integrated design process for achieving higher efficiency levels in buildings. Don will discuss the energy impacts of architectural design, show how to minimize loads, and describe HVAC and control issues. You will learn how to design a building that achieves the 2010 goals today.
Learner Objectives
By the end of this webcast, participants should be able to:
- Identify the pressures for energy efficient building design
- Describe the design process for achieving higher levels of efficiency in buildings
- Explain how the various design and construction disciplines integrate to contribute to designing efficient buildings
- Describe how the envelope, loads, and HVAC system work together to minimize energy usage
- Explain the post-design issues related to high performance, efficient buildings
Who should view this webcast?
Architects, engineers, building design professionals
