Joe Nagan discusses exhaust ventilation used to control excess moisture in new homes and shares his experience with bath fan ducting issues seen in the field. A duct and bath fan demonstration will follow the presentation.
Overview
New homes that are well built and extremely tight can rely on spot ventilation to remove excess moisture from the home. The basic exhaust fan is now a tool the homeowner can use to control and eliminate moisture. ASHRAE-62.2 whole-building and spot ventilation requirements can be met with exhaust fans, however the rated flow should be tested to confirm the equipment is working correctly. This is the only way to assure the standards are met and that the homeowner has the 'ability to control' moisture and background IAQ.
