Sherry McKibben discusses sustainable development in the context of community planning and urban design. She presents the key concepts and elements of sustainable development focusing on redevelopment, smart location and linkages, and mixed-use neighborhood redevelopment.

Overview

Key concepts of sustainable development include: Smart Growth, New Urbanism, and Transit Oriented Development. These concepts are applied to developing smart locations with linkages to housing, jobs and schools that preserve farmland and provide opportunities for local food production. Brownfield and greyfield redevelopment and retrofitting neighborhoods with mixed use development are examples of some sustainable development opportunities.

  • Identify the key concepts of sustainable development
  • Define development patterns including transit oriented development, Smart Growth, New Urbanism, compact development, brownfield and greyfield redevelopment
