Incentives

Turning your electric meter backward (net metering): Say that on a cool, sunny day your business is using less power then your PV system generates. For grid connected systems, Wisconsin's major utilities are required by law to let your meter run backwards. The idea is that, when your demand increases beyond your ability to generate, you can pull your PV electricity back off the utility's grid. This is called net metering. There are incentives available to help bring down the cost of commercial PV systems. (For more information visit http://www.ecw.org/wisconsun/fund/index.shtml.) They include:

  • Focus on Energy Renewable Energy program, cash back rewards
  • Focus on Energy Implementation Grants
  • Federal 10% tax credit, 30% year one depreciation, and accelerated 5 ½ year depreciation
  • State Property Tax Exemption
  • Net metering (see text box)

Uninterrupted Power Supply (UPS)

Public area beneath a PV atrium Is your business dependent on the uninterrupted supply of power? Perhaps installing a PV system with a battery backup to support critical systems, such as computer and telephone systems, would make sense. A PV/UPS system will add both cost and complexity to your system. But if you have electric appliances vital to your business, your potential losses may rapidly cover the additional cost of the battery backup system.
