MADISON, Wis. (June, 1999)÷A new solar energy initiative will provide $100,000 over the next three years to install solar energy systems at sites across Wisconsin. The Wisconsin Solar Use Network÷WisconSUN ÷focuses on cost-effective solar energy systems that are highly visible and create community educational opportunities. The program supports the promotion and installation of both photovoltaic (PV) and active solar thermal energy systems.

"WisconSUN's goals are to increase the number of effective solar energy systems by providing assistance to prospective system owners and supporting Wisconsinâs commercial solar energy service and technology providers," explains Niels Wolter, program director. Over the next three years, WisconSUN will support Wisconsinâs solar energy community in a number of areas including marketing, training, project feasibility assessment, system implementation assistance and system performance evaluation.

"We are creating a network of solar energy service and technology providers to assist interested solar energy system owners," says Wolter. "Weâre looking for more people and organizations interested in a solar energy systems for their building or grounds, or anyone who might benefit from the programâs technical assistance and project co-funding." Solar energy architects, engineers, dealers, installers, financiers, advocates and policymakers are strongly encouraged to join the network.

WisconSUN has already supported one PV advocate, Waunakee High School science teacher Steve Bower. A system he promoted will be installed on the schoolâs roof this fall and will initially provide 2 kilowatts (kW) of power. Over the coming years, students will annually design and add 1 kW additions to the system until it provides 10 to 20 kW of power. The PV system will also be integrated into the schoolâs science and business curriculum. WisconSUN supported the installation by developing the projectâs strategy and design, co-authoring proposals, supporting implementation activities and providing $10,000 in project co-funding.

WisconSUN was created by the Energy Center of Wisconsin÷a private nonprofit organization dedicated to improving energy efficiency in Wisconsin÷in partnership with the Midwest Renewable Energy Association, the Wisconsin Energy Bureau and the U.S. Department of Energyâs Million Solar Roofs program.
