Million Solar Roofs Registry ö Wisconsin Sites Needed!!

MADISON, Wis. (January 2000) ÷ The U.S. Department of Energy has set up a process for registering solar energy sites that were installed after June 27, 1997. The registry was created to measure public support of solar energy systems. Also, our Federal legislators like to see ãquantifiableä results for their budget appropriations.

There are currently only three sites registered in Wisconsin! Wisconsin has set a goal of 3,860 sites by 2010.

If the number of registered sites remains small, it will be taken as an indication that solar energy is not of interest to the public, and thus may result in reduced federal and state support of solar energy. However if registration is significant it can be used to leverage additional funds for PV programs and incentives.

The registry is confidential. All that people outside of the DOE will be able to see is that the site is PV or solar thermal and in which state it is located. To sign up, all that is required is:

  • Type of system (PV or solar thermal)
  • Size (in kW for PV, or kW equivalent or square feet of collector area)
  • Location (city, state and zip code)
  • Date of installation
  • Building type (residential, school, church, commercial, or governmental)

People that want a Million Solar Roof certificate will also need to provide:

  • The system owner's or another contact name
  • The street address of the system

The Million Solar Roofs program would also appreciate the following information:

  • Systems ownerâs phone number
  • Installed cost

The Wisconsin Solar Use Network (WisconSUN) has signed up as a Million Solar Roofs registrar. Provide WisconSUN with the above information and we will be happy to sign up any eligible systems that you were involved in installing. These systems must meet some simple requirements.

The system must:

  • Have been installed after June 27, 1997

Photovoltaic Systems:

  • Residential systems must be a minimum of 0.5 kW.
  • School and church systems must be a minimum of 1.0 kW.
  • Commercial systems must be a minimum of 2.0 kW.

Solar Thermal Water Heating Systems:

  • Residential systems must be a minimum of 1.0 kW equivalent or 20 ft2 of collector area.
  • Residential swimming pool heating systems must be a minimum of 100 ft2 of collector area.
  • Commercial domestic systems must be a minimum of 2.0 kW or 40 ft2 of collector area.
  • Commercial swimming pool heating systems must be a minimum of 400 ft2 of collector area.

Solar Thermal Space Heating Systems:

  • Collector area must be a minimum of 100 ft2 or 4.0 kW.
